With a share of 17 per cent in the Indian smartphone market, Realme beats Samsung’s sales to become the second-largest brand. Xiaomi continues to lead the market with 24 per cent, while Samsung comes in second with 16 per cent.
Samsung lost to Xiaomi in sales a few years ago. As experts predict, Xiaomi will face tough competition from Realme, which has its sights set on becoming the biggest player in the market. With its positioning as a Xiaomi alternative, Realme has been able to increase its market share in the west.
“Our growth over the past three years is a demonstration of the love that our users have for the brand. Ever since Realme came into existence, all our efforts have been put into bringing leap-forward technologies to the users and providing them with the best of experiences,” said Realme India’s CEO Madhav Sheth.
Over the years, Realme has emerged as one of the most aggressive brands. The company shipped over 100 million smartphones in 2017. Its sales increased by 20 per cent year on year in the 4th quarter of 2021, making it the fastest-growing smartphone brand.
The company has made significant gains in the software department, and, like Xiaomi, most of its sales are in the budget segment. As a result of the GT series, however, the midrange and high-range categories have seen a significant increase in sales. It is expected that the GT2 series, which is already available in China, will be introduced to the Indian market soon.
Besides Realme, Apple also ranked among the fastest-growing brands in 2021, with a 108 per cent year-on-year increase in shipments. It leads the premium segment in India with a massive 44 per cent market share.
According to a report by Counterpoint Research, smartphone shipments in India have grown 11 per cent year on year, which is the best ever for the country. The Indian smartphone market revenue crossed 38 billion in 2021.
