A step towards new eco-system: “Nothing” to launch its “Phone 1”

Tech company, Nothing Technology Limited has finally announced its first smartphone, the “Phone 1”. Carl Pei, the CEO and Founder of the Nothing Technology Limited spoke about the launch of the phone at “The Truth” event held virtually.

According to the company, Nothing Phone 1 will “breathe new life into the sleepy smartphone industry” and offer enhanced value to users with a one-of-a-kind design. There were no specifications provided, however, one thing was clear from the event: Nothing is collaborating with Qualcomm, which is the likely chipset supplier. Furthermore, Samsung, Sony, and Visionox will also be key component suppliers for the company.

Until now, the company has just produced audio gadgets and recently launched its Bluetooth earphones, Nothing Ear 1. The earphone comes in a transparent box which created a lot of attention for the brand. But now the company is entering the smartphone market and aims to challenge the leading players like Apple.

The event gave “nothing” about the design of the phone. However, the phone is expected to have a transparent back showing some of its components and a notification light. This bold design move will be in sync with the transparent feel of the BlueTooth earphones. “It’s going to look different,” said Carl while talking about the design of the phone.

The company has released images of “Nothing OS,” the Android skin that will be used by Phone 1. Images don’t reveal much about what the software might be capable of. The navigation interface uses a dotted font as the company’s logo.

In an interview with Indian tech YouTuber, Technical Guruji, Carl expressed his views on the current scenario of the smartphone market. According to him, there was a lot of momentum earlier but the last 3-5 years have not seen any major innovation. He even says that companies are said to be holding back features just to have something to release on the next phone.

“Apple is the only company that is providing the users with an eco-system. Everything just works well with each other. But if you go to an android phone, that doesn’t connect with all the products around.” Carl said. Keeping this challenge in mind the new phone is a big step towards the goal of the company to create an eco-system of interconnected devices.
