In a strategic move, Coca-Cola India has marked its foray into the ready-to-drink tea market with the launch of ‘Honest Tea.’ This venture is a significant diversification for the soft drink giant and a unique collaboration with Darjeeling’s prestigious Makaibari tea estate, owned by the Luxmi Group.
Coca-Cola’s Evolution through the Honest Tea” Journey”
Coca-Cola, the world’s most popular beverage, has a rich history dating back to 1886 when pharmacist John Pemberton accidentally created a caramel-colored syrup intended as a medicinal tonic. Pemberton’s partner, Asa Griggs Candler, recognized the syrup’s commercial potential and began marketing it as a refreshing drink. By 1900, Coca-Cola had become a national sensation, and the iconic contour bottle was introduced in 1915.
In 2008, Coca-Cola acquired a 40% stake in Honest Tea, a popular organic bottled tea company founded in 1998 by Seth Goldman and Barry Nalebuff. Honest Tea’s commitment to organic ingredients and social responsibility aligned with Coca-Cola’s growing focus on sustainability. In 2011, Coca-Cola acquired the remaining portion of Honest Tea, seeking to expand its presence in the growing ready-to-drink tea market.
However, in 2022, Coca-Cola discontinued Honest Tea products, citing a need to streamline its portfolio and focus on its core brands. This move drew criticism from Honest Tea loyalists. Still, Coca-Cola maintained that it remained committed to sustainability and social responsibility.
A Sip of Heritage: The Makaibari Connection
The brand ‘Honest Tea,’ a subsidiary of the Coca-Cola Company, is set to introduce an organic green tea sourced from the renowned Makaibari Tea Estate in Darjeeling. This historic tea estate, praised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his 2015 visit to the United Kingdom, adds a touch of legacy to Coca-Cola’s innovative beverage lineup.
Managing Director of Luxmi Group, Rudra Chatterjee, remarked, “There is no greater tea estate in Darjeeling than Makaibari. It is the last word among teas, whether in Japan or England, royal houses.”
The Bengal Global Business Summit Unveiling
The announcement was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed at the seventh edition of the Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS), underlining the strategic significance of this partnership. The move aligns with Coca-Cola’s commitment to providing consumers with diverse beverage options.
Karthik Subramanian, Director of Marketing – Hydration, Coffee, and Tea Category, Coca-Cola India and Southwest Asia, expressed excitement, “We are thrilled to introduce our new ready-to-drink iced green tea. With Honest Tea, we are offering consumers a unique experience of a great-tasting green tea-based beverage.”
The Coca-Cola’s Honest Tea Experience: Lemon-Tulsi and Mango Variants
‘Honest Tea’ will debut with two enticing variants – Lemon-Tulsi and Mango. This diversification aligns with Coca-Cola’s aim to cater to evolving consumer preferences and contribute to the ever-expanding ready-to-drink tea market.
A Glimpse into the Future: Beyond Mere Refreshment
While the initial focus is on introducing refreshing iced green tea, Coca-Cola India has long-term plans to challenge mainstream rivals, including Tata. This strategic vision positions Honest Tea’ not just as a fleeting addition but as a contender for a sustained presence in the competitive beverage landscape.

Coca-Cola India’s collaboration with Makaibari tea estate not only brings forth a refreshing beverage but also symbolizes a blending of tradition and innovation. ‘Honest Tea’ aims to offer consumers a genuine and unique experience, inviting them to savor the legacy of Makaibari through every sip. As Coca-Cola ventures into the world of tea, it not only expands its product portfolio but also embraces the rich heritage of Indian tea culture.
